Patient Instructions
  1. 1Bring Driver’s License or Photo ID and Insurance Card on day of surgical procedure.
  2. 2Notify surgeon of any changes in physical condition (e.g., cold or fever).
  3. 3Inform surgeon of any medical problems or medications being taken.
  4. 4Do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to surgery (exceptions for medication with a sip of water).
  5. 5Diabetic patients will receive individual counseling regarding fasting.
  6. 6Wear loose fitting clothing that will accommodate dressings, soft goods, and casting materials.
  7. 7Leave all valuables at home and remove jewelry from the affected limb.
  8. 8Clean finger and toe nails of the affected extremity; remove artificial nails or fingernail polish.
  9. 9Arrange for an adult escort to drive home after surgery.
  10. 10If having general anesthesia, an adult must stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  11. 11Bring any soft goods (braces, slings, post-op shoes, Polar Care units) given at the pre-operative visit.
  12. 12Arrive at the ASC one hour prior to the surgical start time.
  13. 13Bring a case for eyeglasses or contact lenses for storage during surgery.
  14. 14Do not wear makeup or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  15. 15Do not drink alcohol, drive a vehicle, sign a legal document, or be responsible for a minor for the first 24 hours post-surgery.
  16. 16Rest for the first couple of days with operated extremity elevated on pillows above the heart to control swelling.
  17. 17Use ice for 20 minutes each hour to control swelling, ensuring ice bag does not leak into dressing.
  18. 18Loosen ace wrap if numbness or tingling continues after 24 hours post-surgery.
  19. 19Do not remove dressing unless specifically instructed by surgeon; keep it clean and dry.
  20. 20Advance to regular foods as tolerated after surgery.
  21. 21Make follow-up appointment with physician as instructed.
