Family doctors in Ontario, Canada are experiencing the detrimental effects of burnout caused by the overwhelming administrative burden they face on a daily basis.

At the recent Pri-Med Conference in Mississauga, Ontario, doctors shared with me how their administrative work often continues beyond regular working hours.

According to an Ontario Medical Association survey, family doctors spend an average of 19 hours per week on administrative tasks like completing forms, tracking lab results, following up with patients, and managing the office.

I've worked with many doctors who consistently stayed late at the clinic catching up on administrative duties. This constant pressure eventually takes a toll on their well-being, leading many doctors to consider leaving their practices altogether.

In 2021, I stepped away from clinic management and operations and joined Cortico, a company driven by a shared mission to alleviate doctors' administrative burden. We have since developed solutions that address the pain points I witnessed among doctors overwhelmed by tedious administrative processes.

Here at Cortico, we understand the desire among family doctors to streamline administrative duties. That's why I want to share the top three tools that'll not only alleviate burnout, but also enhance your work-life balance.

Reduce Administrative Work Using Cortico's Secure Patient Messaging Tool

One tool I consistently recommend to doctors is Cortico's instant messenger, which revolutionizes doctor-patient communication, while also reducing administrative work and saving valuable time during the day.

The feedback I've received from clinics that utilize this feature is that it simplifies the process of following up with patients after appointments, creating a more efficient clinical workflow.

Secure messaging and file sharing also makes patient documentation super easy, reducing the amount of ticklers sent to staff. In fact, a doctor at the Pri-Med conference shared that they haven't sent a single tickler since they started using the instant messenger.

By streamlining communication with patients, the instant messaging tool not only enhances the overall quality of care provided, but also saves doctors time throughout their day, ultimately fostering a better work-life balance.

Streamlined Clinic Management: How Cortico's Online Booking System Benefit Doctors

My experience in clinic management and operations gave me crucial insights to share with Cortico's development team. This is how we were able to enhance the online booking system, incorporating features that streamline patient booking while adapting to the unique workflows of different clinics.

Cortico's advanced online booking system seamlessly integrates with the clinic's existing technology, streamlining operations and reducing administrative work. Patients can book and manage their own appointments, which significantly reduces the volume of phone calls to the clinic.

Family doctors want more time for direct patient care, but right now about 40% of their time is spent on administrative work.

With Cortico's online booking system, a doctor opening a new clinic was able to book over 600 patient appointments within 48-72 hours. Online booking makes it easier for that doctor's clinic to schedule appointments, which reduces tedious administrative work, allowing them to focus on delivering safe care to their patients.

Alleviate Workflow Burden: The Impact of Batch Reminders on Doctor's Efficiency

When I left my clinic management job, there were many inefficiencies that could have been easily resolved by patient engagement and automation tools like Cortico. Medical staff at the clinic would spend an excessive amount of time manually contacting patients of their appointment.

I've found that batch reminders help medical staff by saving them time normally spent crafting a message to patients, which adds up quickly.

When medical staff have more time to support doctors in handling complex clinical work, it gives doctors space to complete their duties during business hours, so they can get home on time. Reducing administrative work creates a stronger work-life balance.
