Patient Instructions
  1. 1For Electrocardiogram (ECG): No food/drink restrictions, take usual medications.
  2. 2For Echocardiogram: No specific preparations, can eat, drink, and take usual medications.
  3. 3For Contrast echocardiogram: No preparation needed, can eat, drink, and take usual medications. An IV will be inserted.
  4. 4For Echocardiogram with saline contrast (bubble study): No specific preparations. An IV will be inserted.
  5. 5For Exercise stress echocardiogram: Wear comfortable walking clothes and running shoes. Test takes approximately 45 minutes. A contrast agent may be used requiring an IV.
  6. 6For Exercise stress testing (Treadmill): Wear comfortable walking clothes and running shoes. Can take usual cardiac medications unless specified otherwise.
  7. 7For 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: Do not drink coffee or caffeinated beverages for 1 hour prior to appointment. Inform technician if you have had a prior mastectomy, are on hemodialysis, or have an AV fistula. This test is not covered by OHIP and costs $75.00 payable by cash.
  8. 8For Holter monitor (24 hrs to 4 weeks): Bring a list of all medications. Wear comfortable clothing and arrive 15 minutes before appointment. May shave hairy chest in advance. Return device at scheduled time.
