Patient Instructions
  1. 1Rinse mouth with warm water and use dental floss to dislodge any food that lies between teeth for toothaches.
  2. 2Apply a cold compress to the outside of mouth or cheek for swelling.
  3. 3Salvage any pieces and rinse them in warm water, along with mouth, for chipped or broken tooth.
  4. 4Apply a piece of gauze to the area for roughly ten minutes or until the bleeding completely ceases for bleeding.
  5. 5Apply a cold compress to the outside of mouth, cheek, or lip near the broken or chipped tooth to limit any swelling and relieve discomfort.
  6. 6Stick a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity or utilize an over-the-counter dental cement for lost filling.
  7. 7Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of clove oil to the sensitive area for misplaced crown if causing significant pain.
  8. 8Coat the surface with an over-the-counter dental cement, toothpaste, or denture adhesive to help hold the crown in position for misplaced crown.
  9. 9Apply a cold compress to the outside of mouth or cheek in the affected area to relieve the pain for dislodged teeth.
  10. 10Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, like Tylenol or Advil, for dislodged teeth.
  11. 11Handle knocked-out tooth gently, without touching the root surface.
  12. 12Quickly and gently rinse knocked-out tooth in water, without any soap or other cleaning agents.
  13. 13Avoid scraping or brushing the knocked-out tooth with a toothbrush.
  14. 14Place knocked-out tooth back in its socket as soon as possible.
  15. 15If knocked-out tooth cannot be placed back in its socket, place it in a bag of milk and head to the dentist office or nearest emergency room.
  16. 16Momentarily re-attach loose braces with a small piece of orthodontic wax or place the wax over the braces to supply a cushion.
  17. 17Try using the eraser end of a pencil to push a broken wire into a more comfortable position.
  18. 18If repositioning the bracket or wire is unmanageable, cover the end with orthodontic wax, a small cotton ball, or a piece of gauze until arrival at office.
  19. 19Do not cut the wire.
  20. 20Rinse mouth with a mild mixture of salt and water for soft-tissue injuries.
  21. 21With a moistened piece of gauze or tea bag, apply pressure to the bleeding area, holding it in place for 15-to-20-minutes for soft-tissue injuries.
  22. 22Hold a compress to the outside of mouth or cheek in the impacted area for 5-to-10-minutes for soft-tissue injuries.
  23. 23Rinse mouth with a mild saltwater solution a few times per day for abscesses.
  24. 24Place a gauze pad over the extraction site and apply pressure by biting down on it for post-extraction bleeding and pain.
  25. 25Avoid using straws, spitting, vigorous swishing of fluids, and smoking after procedures.
  26. 26Use a soft-bristle toothbrush for brushing.
  27. 27Keep gums clean with gentle brushing, flossing, and rinsing with warm saltwater (1/2 tsp of regular table salt in 8oz of warm water).
