Patient Instructions
  1. 1Please call at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule your exam.
  2. 2Bring all pertinent medical information including previous x-rays or ultrasounds and insurance information at the time of your appointment; give these to the front desk as you check-in.
  3. 3Bring your valid health card on the day of your appointment.
  4. 4Dress comfortably in loose fitting clothes.
  5. 5Arrive 15 minutes before your exam, unless advised otherwise by an UMI representative.
  6. 6Bring the referral form from your doctor and give it to reception as you check-in.
  7. 7Notify the Receptionist if you are pregnant or taking any medication.
  8. 8If you have any special needs you would like us to accommodate please let us know at least 24 hours in advance (preference for a male or female Technologist/Sonographer, physical limitations).
  9. 9Bring any prior radiological tests (x-rays, ultrasounds, etc.) these may be helpful to the Radiologist for means of comparison.
  10. 10Do not come to the examination if your are intoxicated or under the influence of illegal drugs.
  11. 11For Bone Mineral Densitometry: DO NOT take calcium supplements or iron tablets until after the examination is completed. These supplements may be found in multi-vitamins and antacids. Please be certain to read the labels when taking all medications within 24 hours prior to the examination. Dairy products are acceptable. You should not have certain radiologic studies within the 7 days before the exam, i.e., barium studies, studies involving IV or oral contrast, or Nuclear Medicine studies. It is preferable to wear clothing without zippers or fasteners (e.g. jogging suit or leggings).
  12. 12For Mammography: If possible, obtain prior mammograms and make them available to the radiologist at the time of the current exam. Before scheduling a mammogram it is recommended that you discuss any new findings or problems in your breasts with your doctor. In addition, inform your doctor of any prior surgeries, hormone use, and family or personal history of breast cancer. Do not schedule your mammogram for the week before your period if your breasts are usually tender during this time. The best time to schedule is one week after your period. Always inform your doctor, radiologist, and x-ray technologist if there is any possibility that you are pregnant. Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. Describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam. You will be asked to remove all jewellery and clothing above the waist and you will be given a gown or loose-fitting material that opens in the front.

  15. 15For Abdominal Ultrasound: Do not to eat or drink for 12 hours before your appointment.
  16. 16For Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: You will have to remove clothing and jewellery in the area to be examined.
  17. 17For Obstetric Ultrasound: You should wear a loose fitting two-piece outfit for the examination. You will be required to have a full bladder for the procedure. For transvaginal ultrasound, an empty urinary bladder is required.
  18. 18For Pediatric Abdominal Ultrasound: For some scans, you will be instructed to withhold food and drink for as many as 12 hours before your child's appointment. For others, you may be asked to have your child drink up to six glasses of water two hours prior to the exam and avoid urinating, so that his or her bladder is full when the scan begins.
  19. 19For Pelvic Ultrasound: You will be asked to drink 32 oz/1 litre of water finishing one hour prior to your exam, so your bladder is full when the scan begins. For transvaginal examinations, no bladder filling is required.
  20. 20For Prostate Ultrasound: A full bladder helps with visualization of the prostate gland, so you will be asked to drink 32 oz/1litre of water finishing one hour prior to your exam, so your bladder is full.
