Patient Instructions
  1. 1To qualify for legal aid, fill out an application with a court worker in your nearest regional clinic.
  2. 2Provide details on what you are looking for help with, two pieces of ID (one photo ID), and two current pay stubs.
  3. 3If not working, provide proof of income support, last two years of CRA Notice of Assessment, or other financial position proof.
  4. 4If arrested, lawyers can be reached 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through the Legal Services Board’s toll free law line number.
  5. 5If you have a general legal question, you can call one of the regional clinics to speak with a lawyer.
  6. 6If you have a question about your personal situation, you will need to apply for Legal Aid.
  7. 7If you are related to a court worker, inform the clinic when applying for legal aid.
  8. 8Keep your contact and income information updated.
  9. 9For each new matter, a new legal aid application is required.
  10. 10If you have court tomorrow and no lawyer, go to court; you may talk to a lawyer there or be given time to apply for legal aid.
  11. 11If in police custody, you can call Legal Aid from the RCMP detachment for free.
  12. 12If you are in an abusive relationship and need urgent legal help, call right away or ask a shelter to contact the clinic.
  13. 13If your child is under 18 and arrested, you can attend court with them and meetings with their lawyer.
  14. 14If your child is over 18, the clinic can only speak to you about their case if your child has given permission.
