  1. 1For abdominal ultrasound, cease eating and drinking four to six hours before scan. Oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water.
  2. 2For abdomen and pelvic ultrasound, cease eating four to six hours before scan and stop voiding and drinking two hours before exam. Oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water.
  3. 3For male pelvis ultrasound, cease drinking and voiding for two hours before scan. Oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water.
  4. 4For obstetrical nuchall transulucency ultrasound, cease voiding for one hour before scan.
  5. 5For obstetrical, first trimester ultrasound, cease voiding for one hour before scan.
  6. 6For obstetrical second trimester anatomical survey, cease voiding for one hour before scan.
  7. 7For non-pregnant pelvic ultrasound, cease drinking and voiding for two hours before scan. If pre-menopausal, exam should be done between day 6 and day 10 of menstrual cycle.
  8. 8For transrectal prostate or rectal wall ultrasound, purchase a fleet enema and self administer at home two to four hours before appointment.
  9. 9For vascular ultrasound, adults should not eat or drink eight hours before exam. Children should not eat or drink four hours before study, or skip one meal. Take medications with a small sip of water. Diabetics should take insulin.
