Patient Instructions
  1. 1Bring health services card and requisition form(s) to appointment.
  2. 2Wear comfortable clothing; avoid metal buttons/zippers for X-rays.
  3. 3Do not wear fragrances.
  4. 4Inform staff of accessibility/mobility issues before examination.
  5. 5Stay on prescribed medications; diabetics on fasting diet should request early morning booking and discuss insulin with physician.
  6. 6For pelvic, bladder, renal ultrasound: empty bladder 1.5 hours before, drink four 8 oz. glasses of water 1 hour prior, do not empty until exam completed.
  7. 7For abdominal ultrasound: fast 8-10 hours prior (except medications with small water).
  8. 8For abdominal plus pelvic ultrasound: fast 8-10 hours, drink water as per pelvic ultrasound, do not empty bladder until exam completed.
  9. 9For thyroid, breast, scrotal, shoulder, or soft tissue ultrasound: no preparation required.
  10. 10For early pregnancy ultrasound (up to 10 weeks): empty bladder 1.5 hours before, drink four 8 oz. glasses of water 1 hour prior, do not empty until exam completed.
  11. 11For mid pregnancy ultrasound (10-20 weeks): empty bladder 1 hour before, drink three 8 oz. glasses of water 1 hour prior, do not empty until exam completed.
  12. 12For late pregnancy ultrasound (after 20 weeks): empty bladder 1 hour before, drink one 8 oz. glass of water, do not empty until exam completed.
  13. 13For mammography: avoid caffeine 3-4 days prior, do not use deodorant, talcum powder, or glitter-containing products on exam day.
  14. 14For mammography: do not schedule for the week before menstrual period; best time is one week following menstrual period.
  15. 15For mammography: inform doctor/technologist if pregnant.
  16. 16For mammography: determine location of prior mammograms and inform reception.
  17. 17For mammography: remove all jewelry and clothing above the waist, wear provided gown/loose-fitting top.
