Referral Information for WomenMD

Referral Process: A referral is required to access services at womenMD. If interested in multiple aspects of the clinic, ask the referring practitioner to check off all correlating boxes on the referral form. As per updated guidelines of BC Family Doctors, effective July 1, 2023, regarding the re-referral process and implicit referrals, patients previously referred prior to July 1, 2023, will require an updated referral. Specialist referrals must be initiated by a family physician, often facilitated through a physician-to-physician letter or referral form. Communication is often via facsimile. Patients are recommended to follow-up on referrals. If no response within 3-4 months, call the office to determine status. Specialist consultants expect appropriate diagnostic work-up prior to referral, requiring patients to perform testing as a requisite to consultation. Some referral services may refuse consultation until strict criteria are met. Chart review, letter preparation, and preliminary work-up review take time; do not request referrals at the end of a visit. Referrals are not required for private-pay medical services or specialist follow-up within a specified period.
How to Refer: For referring physicians and nurse practitioners, fax patient referral information and form to 250-940-6011.
Required Documents
  • Referral form
  • patient referral information
  • appropriate diagnostic work-up (testing) as a requisite to consultation.
Average Wait Times: Lengthy wait times for a specialist consultation are expected, typically several months. Routine MRI and CT scans can take several months, and even 'urgent' requests can take weeks.
