Patient Instructions:
  • Bring Driver’s License or Photo ID and Insurance Card on day of surgical procedure.
  • Notify surgeon of any changes in physical condition (e.g., cold or fever).
  • Inform surgeon of any medical problems or medications being taken.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to surgery (exceptions for medication with a sip of water).
  • Diabetic patients will receive individual counseling regarding fasting.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing that will accommodate dressings, soft goods, and casting materials.
  • Leave all valuables at home and remove jewelry from the affected limb.
  • Clean finger and toe nails of the affected extremity; remove artificial nails or fingernail polish.
  • Arrange for an adult escort to drive home after surgery.
  • If having general anesthesia, an adult must stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Bring any soft goods (braces, slings, post-op shoes, Polar Care units) given at the pre-operative visit.
  • Arrive at the ASC one hour prior to the surgical start time.
  • Bring a case for eyeglasses or contact lenses for storage during surgery.
  • Do not wear makeup or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol, drive a vehicle, sign a legal document, or be responsible for a minor for the first 24 hours post-surgery.
  • Rest for the first couple of days with operated extremity elevated on pillows above the heart to control swelling.
  • Use ice for 20 minutes each hour to control swelling, ensuring ice bag does not leak into dressing.
  • Loosen ace wrap if numbness or tingling continues after 24 hours post-surgery.
  • Do not remove dressing unless specifically instructed by surgeon; keep it clean and dry.
  • Advance to regular foods as tolerated after surgery.
  • Make follow-up appointment with physician as instructed.
