Patient Age Range:All ages, with specific programs for patients aged 65+ (Early Mobility Program) and women (Breast Screening, Mammogram, Well Woman Clinics, Prenatal Clinics, Postnatal Care).

Patient Instructions:
  • Appointments are required for blood collection service.
  • Water sample must be collected the same morning as drop-off and not the evening before using the water testing bottle and requisition provided by NS Health.
  • If your family wishes to bring food from home, please talk about this with your nurse before eating.
  • Please do not leave perishable items at your bedside. Refrigerators are available on your unit. Label food items with your name, room number, and date.
  • For TV service, dial 1-866-223-3686 from your bedside telephone. Payment can be made by Visa or MasterCard.
  • To request telephone service, dial 899 from your bedside telephone between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.
  • Cell phones and other wireless devices may be used in some areas of the hospital. Please look for signs before using your device. For the safety of patients, please turn off your cell phone when you are not in a cell phone-friendly area.
  • For Dial for Dining, choose from your menu and dial 844 from your bedside phone to place your order.
  • If you follow a special diet or have food-related allergies or sensitivities, be sure to let us know when you arrive.
  • For breast screening, women over the age of 40 who have no breast problems and no breast implants may self-refer by calling HRM: 473-3960 or Toll-Free: 1-800-565-0548. Have your health card ready when you call.
  • For mammograms, women or men that have symptoms of a breast problem should go to the family doctor and get a referral. Women over the age of 40 with no breast problems or implants may self-refer by calling HRM: 902-473-3960 or Toll-Free: 1-800-565-0548. Have your health card number ready when you call.
  • For Psychosocial Oncology, if you live in the South Shore area, you can self-refer by calling the Social Worker at 902-599-2945.

Online booking for blood collection and EKG. For other services, patients are typically contacted for appointments after a referral is received, or they can call the general inquiry numbers.

Referral Process: Referrals are required for most diagnostic imaging services (CT, Echocardiogram, ECG/EKG, Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, X-Ray), Cardiovascular Risk Factor Clinic, COPD program, Heart Function Clinics, Hip and Knee Pre-habilitation Program, Hip Arthritis and Hip Replacement, Home exercise program, Knee Arthritis and Knee Replacement, Pre-anaesthesia Clinic, and Rapid Access TIA and Stroke Secondary Prevention Clinic. Community-Based Cancer Clinics also require a referral from a family doctor or specialist.
How to Refer: Referrals can be sent by fax for Cardiovascular Risk Factor Clinic, Heart Function Clinics, Home exercise program, and Rapid Access TIA and Stroke Secondary Prevention Clinic. For Hip and Knee Pre-habilitation Program, Hip Arthritis and Hip Replacement, and Knee Arthritis and Knee Replacement, a completed referral form and updated X-rays are required. For the INSPIRED COPD Outreach Program, physicians or respirologists need to fill out the referral form. For Pre-anaesthesia Clinic, referral is from the surgeon or Registered Nurse in the Pre-admission Clinic.
