• For abdominal ultrasound, cease eating and drinking four to six hours before scan. Oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water.
• For abdomen and pelvic ultrasound, cease eating four to six hours before scan and stop voiding and drinking two hours before exam. Oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water.
• For male pelvis ultrasound, cease drinking and voiding for two hours before scan. Oral medications can be taken with a small amount of water.
• For obstetrical nuchall transulucency ultrasound, cease voiding for one hour before scan.
• For obstetrical, first trimester ultrasound, cease voiding for one hour before scan.
• For obstetrical second trimester anatomical survey, cease voiding for one hour before scan.
• For non-pregnant pelvic ultrasound, cease drinking and voiding for two hours before scan. If pre-menopausal, exam should be done between day 6 and day 10 of menstrual cycle.
• For transrectal prostate or rectal wall ultrasound, purchase a fleet enema and self administer at home two to four hours before appointment.
• For vascular ultrasound, adults should not eat or drink eight hours before exam. Children should not eat or drink four hours before study, or skip one meal. Take medications with a small sip of water. Diabetics should take insulin.
