The department has an impressive clinical and basic research program, with active and well-funded programs focusing on ischemia, reperfusion, coagulation, inflammation, myocardial muscle degeneration, periodontal disease and nerve regeneration, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injury, tissue engineering, and stem cell biology and tissue regeneration. The Surgical ICU Translational Research (STAR) Center is a collaborative research center focusing on translational, clinical and outcomes research in the surgical ICU.
