Patient Instructions
  1. 1Referrals are required to access services UNLESS you are an "unattached" patient (do not have a Family Doctor).
  2. 2If you have a Family Physician, Midwife or Nurse practitioner, have your Provider fax the Referral to 604-409-3979.
  3. 3Referrals are not required for emergency IUDs.
  4. 4If you have private insurance and prefer to buy your device at the clinic, confirm coverage with your Insurer for the date of service and let the clinic know you'll be buying the device at the time of your appointment.
  5. 5All other patients referred to the clinic MUST bring the device to the appointment.
  6. 6Ask the referring Doctor/HCP to counsel you about the different devices and request a prescription.
  7. 7Take the prescription to your pharmacy ahead of time and bring the unopened package to your appointment.
  8. 8If you still have difficulties, call the office at least one week before your appointment and have your pharmacy phone and fax number available.
  9. 9For IUD removal, do not have sex or must use condoms for at least one week before IUD removal to prevent any chance of pregnancy.
  10. 10If planning to switch to the pill, patch, or ring, ideally start your new method 7 days before your IUD removal appointment.
  11. 11For the first 24 hours after an IUD insertion or removal, avoid placing anything inside the vagina to lower the risk of infection.
  12. 12During the first 24 hours after IUD insertion/removal, use pads or panty liners and take showers.
  13. 13After 24 hours, you can resume all normal activities, including hot tubs, swimming, and the use of menstrual cups or tampons.
  14. 14If you experience low grade cramping after the procedure, take Ibuprofen or Tylenol or use a heating pad.
