It has an annual portfolio of biomedical research of more than $436.2 million and a research portfolio of more than $413 million. It is recognized among the nation's top 100 oncology programs and is 1 of 4 NCI-designated Cancer Centers in Texas. It is also the First National Institute on Aging-designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in Texas. The institution conducts basic research with the goal of translating discoveries into strategies and therapies, and into clinical studies on diseases, disorders, and conditions. It has a new Center for Brain Health and is involved in research for metabolic treatment for diabetic heart disease, drug development for glioblastoma, and aging research through the Nathan Shock Center.
