Instructions

  1. For DEXA scan, do not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoiding garments with metal. Remove keys or wallets from the scanned area. You may be asked to remove some or all clothing and wear a gown. Remove jewelry, removable dental appliances, eye glasses, and any metal objects. Alert technologist if pregnant.
  2. For CT scan, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Metal objects, including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, and hairpins, should be left at home or removed. You may be asked to remove hearing aids and removable dental work. Women will be asked to remove bras with metal underwire. Remove any piercings if possible. Do not eat or drink for a few hours beforehand if contrast material is used. Inform your physician of all medications and allergies. If allergic to contrast material, your doctor may prescribe medication. Inform your doctor of recent illnesses or medical conditions, and if you have a history of heart disease, asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, or thyroid problems. Women should always inform their physician and the CT technologist if there is any possibility of pregnancy.
  3. For Ultrasound, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined and may be asked to wear a gown. Preparation depends on the type of examination; for some scans, do not eat or drink for up to 12 hours. For others, drink up to six glasses of water two hours prior and avoid urinating to ensure a full bladder.
