Accuro and OSCAR use different product and support models. Accuro is the operating brand of QHR Technologies, a Loblaw subsidiary. OSCAR began at McMaster University as open-source software. OSCAR Pro is a separate commercial offering from WELLSTAR. This comparison helps a clinic ask each vendor the same questions before it changes or renews an EMR.
Accuro vs OSCAR at a glance
| Question | Accuro | OSCAR / OSCAR Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides the product? | Accuro is QHR Technologies’ operating brand. QHR is a Loblaw subsidiary. | McMaster makes the original OSCAR code available under GPL v2+. OSCAR Pro is a commercial offering from WELLSTAR. |
| How is it deployed? | Accuro documents a Cloud transition. By October 2023, it said a majority of users had moved to Accuro Cloud, which uses Accuro ONE ID, MFA and Citrix StoreFront. | An OSCAR clinic can use self-hosted or provider-hosted open-source software. OSCAR Pro is a managed commercial option. Confirm the exact branch and provider. |
| Where do users log in? | Cloud users follow the clinic’s Accuro Cloud route. Accuro publishes login.accuro.cloud and accuro.cloud for Cloud access. |
There is no universal OSCAR login URL. The clinic’s host or support provider supplies the access route. |
| What support model applies? | Accuro publishes a support line and routes Cloud, billing, technical and lab issues to different options. | McMaster directs deployed-clinic users to their supporting organization. OSCAR Pro supports its own customers. |
| What does pricing look like? | Accuro’s public pages do not disclose a licence model or rate card. Ask for a written quote. | The original code is open source. Production hosting, support and OSCAR Pro are quote-based. |
| What should we verify before signing? | Cloud setup, training, migration, provincial interfaces, support scope and renewal terms. | Exact branch, host, supported version, upgrade path, provincial interfaces and export terms. |
| How does Cortico fit? | Accuro Marketplace lists Cortico Appointment Reminders and Cortico Video Visits as integrated. | OSCAR Pro lists Cortico as an integrated patient-engagement partner. Verify the clinic’s branch and configured workflow. |
Side-by-side history

| Year | Accuro (QHR) | OSCAR |
|---|---|---|
| 2001 | - | Dr. David Chan and McMaster University’s Department of Family Medicine create OSCAR, short for Open Source Clinical Application Resource. McMaster licenses the original project under GPL v2+. |
| 2012 | - | A developer-list release summary records next-open-slot search, signed prescriptions for faxing, eForm database tags, Ontario billing, OLIS queries and Hospital Report Manager receiving. |
| 2019 | Accuro reports work across BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. | An ecosystem of independent support providers has grown around the shared OSCAR codebase. |
| 2020 | - | OSCAR Pro says WELLSTAR acquired KAI Innovations and created its commercial offering. |
| 2021 | Accuro describes Accuro Cloud as the next stage of its Cloud transition. | - |
| 2023 | Accuro says a majority of users had transitioned to Cloud, with Accuro ONE ID, MFA and Admin Centre improvements. | - |
| 2025 | Accuro’s year review describes workflow, AI-scribe and appointment-rescheduling updates. | - |
| 2026 | QHR Technologies begins operating under the Accuro brand while remaining the legal entity on agreements. | - |
The useful distinction is product structure, not a universal winner. Accuro documents an Accuro Cloud path, and a clinic should confirm its current deployment and access route with Accuro. OSCAR installations can vary by branch, host and support provider. A clinic should test the applicable model against its own support capacity, province and workflow.
Compare the evidence that matters
Deployment and access
Accuro publishes support routes for Cloud, billing, technical and lab issues, with ONE ID, MFA and Citrix access documented. For OSCAR, the support contact depends on the clinic’s branch and provider: McMaster directs deployed-clinic users to their supporting organization, while OSCAR Pro supports its own customers.
Ask each vendor who hosts the production system, who controls updates, and how staff regain access after an outage. Put the response in the agreement.
Forms, billing and provincial workflows
Accuro’s 2025 product review describes template and form controls. OSCAR’s developer history includes eForms, Ontario billing, OLIS and Hospital Report Manager work. Those facts establish that both products support configurable clinical workflows. They do not establish that a specific clinic’s configuration or province is supported today.
Ask each provider for a written list of interfaces they support for your province, payment model and lab connections.
Support and upgrades
Ask each provider for its supported upgrade path, test plan and rollback process. These details can vary by deployment and contract. Ask Accuro how its current update and rollback process applies to the clinic’s deployment and contract. Ask any OSCAR provider the same question for the clinic’s branch and version.
Which questions should a clinic use in a quote review?
| Ask both providers | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which exact product, branch and version will we run? | “OSCAR” and “Cloud” describe families of deployments, not one uniform implementation. |
| Who hosts it and who handles an outage? | The answer assigns operational responsibility. |
| Which provincial billing, lab and referral interfaces are included? | Interface coverage varies by province and contract. |
| What converts during migration and what remains accessible afterward? | A written migration scope prevents gaps in the budget and record-access plan. |
| How are upgrades tested and rolled back? | A tested upgrade path protects clinic operations. |
| What are the licence, training, support and annual-increase terms? | Public pages do not disclose every pricing model. A written quote makes the comparison fair. |
| Which Cortico workflows are configured for our exact instance? | Marketplace and partner listings describe supported integrations, not every configuration. |
Bring your own workflow checklist
Compare these tasks in each proposed environment:
- Which eForms do we use today, and which need rebuilding?
- How will lab results route for our province and clinic?
- How will staff send and receive fax or eFax items?
- How will clinicians manage prescription renewals?
- How will the clinic route and track referrals?
How Cortico is listed for each product
Accuro Marketplace lists Cortico Appointment Reminders and Cortico Video Visits as integrated. The Marketplace says reminder confirmations and cancellations update in Accuro in real time.
OSCAR Pro’s integrations page lists Cortico as an integrated patient-engagement partner. Confirm the clinic’s OSCAR branch and configured workflow before committing to a rollout.
