Research Involvement

Dr. Alvarez-Farinetti was actively involved in clinical research protocols using high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate and breast cancer. He also participated in trials of aggressive twice-daily radiotherapy and chemotherapy for advanced head and neck cancers. As a faculty member, he initiated a study of radiotherapy with a combined EGFR- and VEGF-inhibitor for the re-treatment of recurrent head and neck cancers and directed the Total Body Irradiation program. Dr. Diamond's research focused on basic intracellular stress response pathways and the use of vascular brachytherapy to prevent restenosis following angioplasty. Dr. LaFave's research in breast cancer and head and neck cancer has been published in scientific journals and presented at national radiation oncology meetings. Dr. Saunders completed a radiobiology research fellowship at Vanderbilt University, where he studied the effects of radiation damage on cells in vitro.
