Dr. Newell's research interests have focused on mechanisms protecting the brain against damage from reduced blood flow and injury, including cerebral blood flow regulation and ultrasound use in brain disorders. He was the first neurosurgeon in the US to research and publish on transcranial Doppler ultrasound in neurosurgical patients. He directed a basic science laboratory at the University of Washington, training residents and fellows in research methods to study brain damage from stroke, and developed the hippocampal slice culture model for ischemic brain damage. He received multiple National Institutes of Health grants and awards, and was a clinical principal investigator in an NIH-funded study on magnesium sulfate for neuroprotection after traumatic brain injury. He was awarded a grant to investigate intracerebral hemorrhage removal using ultrasound catheters. He has published nearly 200 articles and chapters and edited 4 books. He is an original author of the Guidelines for the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.
